How to only partially download a torrent
I've recently started to consolidate torrents. Bigger torrents means more people
are downloading the same file, which is much easier for me to seed. Plus the larger
file means it's more likely it will stay seeded on it's own for longer.
But what if you just want to check out what a manga series is like before downloading
a whole 10+ volumes of it? With BitTorrent clients such as
Azureus,
BitTornado and possibly some others it is possible
to partially download a torrent file.
BitTornado
In BitTornado click on Details after you have started downloading.

Then just right-click on the files you don't want, and select download never.

Once the files you want to check out are shown as 100%, you can open them and
view them. If you then decide to download the whole torrent anyway, just do the same
but select download normally. As you can see you can also prioritize certain
files this way.
Azureus
In Azureus double-click on the torrent after you have started downloading. This will
then open a new tab. On this tab, select the Files section. Then just right click
on the files you don't want, click on Set Priority and select do not download.

If you want to download the whole torrent, just do the same and select
normal priority.
Tip!
For those who don't know: if you hold down the Shift key while clicking on the
first and last option in a list, you can select the whole row of files. You can also
select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on each individual
file.
Notice!
Note that if you set any file to do not download, your download will never complete!
The reason is simple: this is because you specifically instructed your BitTorrent client
to never complete it. Check the percentage done level in the Details / Files view
of your client to see if individual files are complete. Last: you client may calculate the
time left to finish value based on the whole file, so just ignore it when doing a partial download.
